What To Do When Things Go Wrong
Content
When something goes wrong what is your first instinct? To go complain to your best friend, or anyone who will listen?
You’re human and that’s what a lot of people do. They call it blowing off steam or venting. It feels good at the moment, but does it get you what you really want?
If something goes wrong, odds are you’re not happy about it. In some way, you’re not getting what you want. What if you could shift the thing that’s wrong and get what you want?
Anita had just purchased a new home and her and her fiance started investing a lot to make it beautiful in the way they wanted.
One of those investments was new hardwood floors. Anita was so excited, until she saw them after they were installed. She said they looked awful.
When she asked what to do about it, here is the coaching I gave her:
- Stop telling the story “They ruined my floors.”
- Focus on what you want, “beautiful floors.”
Anita did that. She resisted the urge to call anyone else and tell them how the contractors ruined her floors and she put her energy into what she wanted, beautiful floors.
She did this for thirty minutes and then the contractor called and said he didn’t like the way his crew did the floors and they would be replacing them. Anita and her fiance didn’t have to do anything. The problem fixed itself because Anita stopped putting her energy into what she didn’t want and invested it into what she did want.
