Therapy Vs. Coaching
Content
Most of my high school and college years I thought I wanted to be a counselor. I loved studying psychology and was enthralled with the ability humans have to change and grow via various methods. When I finished college, I enrolled in a Master’s of Counseling program. The further I got into the program, the more I felt like counseling was too slow for me. I wanted to help people make change faster.
I statered exploring energetic modalities and other ways to change people’s thoughts. I found a modality I loved and I practiced it on myself a lot. Then one day after repeating the same session I had done the week before I realized I couldn’t “change” or “fix” myself anymore to get what I wanted. I had to start becoming the person I wanted to be. So, I did. That is how I started coaching.
There are a lot of lists out there about what the difference between therapy and coahcing is and I believe sharing personal experiences is often more valuable when you’re trying to decide what is best for you. Below is an excerpt taking from an episode of Manifesting Success Stories where Anita, who had been in therapy decided to participate in coaching instead. Here are her words and experience about the differences.
How and why she made the switch from therapy to coaching:
“I had actually stopped going to my therapist because she retired and I did not want to go to another therapist and explain everything all over again.
So I figured, you know what, I'm going to try to not do that and get really into law of attraction and try to fix my issues with positivity and love instead of just repeating my problems over and over again. So I was doing a lot of research. I was listening to podcasts, listening to a lot of Louise hay self-love affirmations. And I was like,
I just need to be listening to LOA stuff. Probably 24 seven. I went through, I started from the very beginning of you and Ginny's podcasts and listened all the way through and then started listening to yours as well and looked into your coaching. Cause I'm like, well, I would really, maybe love to do that someday as a career. So I should probably get some coaching myself, find out what that's all about and looked into your private coaching, which was not accessible to me at this point in my life. But I saw the enchanted circle opportunity and decided to just jump in and give it a go.”
The biggest difference between for Anita, personally, between coaching and therapy has been so far:
“Definitely that I'm repeating what's good. And what is going wrong and how to fix everything.
How does that feel?
Great. I've been trying to get through family… life by just repeating them over and over again and trying to rack my brain for a solution.
And there isn't one, So It's just a never ending cycle. And I realized I don't actually want to go see a therapist forever because this is getting annoying.”Y
The biggest difference in your life so far as a result of being a member of the Enchanted Circle?
“Well, I already knew about law of attraction before, and I have manifested some pretty awesome stuff in my life, but I knew I could use a lot more help and get more specific and needed some individual, I guess, pointers.”
