How To Save Money - Even If You Think You Can't
Content
Have you ever thought to yourself that everyone can save money but you? I did! I always envied people who could save money, and always wished that I could. I just couldn’t figure out the “why” of not being able to keep money in my savings. What if I told you that you can save money, even if you think you can’t?
Part of the reason you can’t save money is that you have been telling yourself about not being able to save money. You’re not alone! I used to tell the story “I can’t save money if my life depended on it.” That story came true every time I told it. Every time I put money in my savings account, I would find something “I had to have ''. It was usually a business idea I had to invest in. And my story was, “I can’t save money…” so my behavior had to match it. I didn’t stop to consciously think about spending the money because I was living my story, “I can’t save money…” When you are telling yourself a story, your brain follows suit. It has to help you make that story come true. So, you find things “you have to have/do” and then you justify why you “have to spend the money you’re trying to save.” You have to do that in order to make the story true. The cycle continues.
When I became aware that I was telling a story about saving money and that I could change it, life began to change. I learned that I could choose a new story, one where I could save money and watch my savings grow. I learned I could tell a story about saving money and my behavior would change too. I also learned, I could start to change my behavior to be in alignment with the story I want to be true, saving money is fun and easy. You can too!
Here are steps you can start doing today to start saving money:
- What story are you currently telling about being able to save money?
- Write down your current story about saving money.
- Now decide what story you want to be true about saving money.
- Write down the new story you want to be true.
- What are you saving for?
- Choose (1) thing you want to save for today
- Sit with your money
- Wait 24 hours before you buy something
Here is one of many amazing experiences I had happen to me after I changed my story about saving money. When I was looking to buy my youngest son his first car, I had put $1500 in savings specifically for it. I only wanted to spend $1500, and I kept waiting for something to show up that was only $1500. I looked online, you know, all the things you do when looking for a car. Then I just set it down. I had caught myself trying to force the car to show up. It wasn’t fun and it definitely wasn’t making me feel good about spending my money on a car for him. Then one day out of the blue (it wasn’t really out of the blue because I had put it down) I overheard a conversation about a car for sale. My ears perked up. I knew this was it. It was easy, perfect for my son, and I got it for lower than the asking price. In two days, I bought my son a car that was perfect for him, that I had saved $1500 for, yet only paid $1250. I had money left over in my savings because I was telling the story “saving money is fun and easy”.
That experience was so fun! Now that I know what I want my story to be about my savings, what I’m saving for, and how to sit with my money, I always have money in my savings to buy or do the things I truly want.
