How to Get and Keep More Money
Content
Do you wish you could get and keep more money? It is so frustrating and disappointing when you keep running out of money. It feels like you get ahead and you just can’t stay ahead. You’re always playing catchup and never have more than enough. Sometimes you feel like you’ve got it, but then the same things happen again and you don’t know how it happened. You thought you had it figured out, but you just don’t know how to do this; how to get and keep money.
You’re probably running out of money so often because of your money story. A money story is the story of how we are with money, and you didn’t choose it on purpose. It just happens without us meaning it to happen. It’s not your fault.
If you are running out of money repeatedly, you might have the money story Survival.
Someone with the money story Survival is someone who gets money, spends it, or plans to spend it right away. Sometimes even before it hits their account. Then a Survival person finds out they’re in the hole or won’t have enough for bills or things they need. Survival money story comes with drama and stress, then periods of peace. It is a cycle that can have you stuck going up and then crashing down repeatedly.
I used to have the money story Survival too. I would have enough money for the things I needed, then get a small windfall of money, and plan to spend it, or spend it before it even hit my checking account.
A great example of this cycle for me was when I was working as a server in Manhattan, NY. I would get a huge tip from a big-time celebrity or the like, and I would tell my coworkers I would take them out for drinks on me that night to celebrate. The tip hadn’t even hit my account, and I had already spent it. A few weeks would go by and I’d realize I was about to be short on my utility bill or rent, and I’d be in the hole and very distraught over it.
That’s the cycle I was talking about.
It felt awful and I always felt out of control with money. I never knew what was happening or how I could change it. Even when I tried, the same things kept happening with money anyway.
I was eventually able to change that money story. I changed my money story, and you can too. I did a few things to make that change.
I started to pay attention when I spent money. This looked like any time I pulled out my wallet, I would pause, take a deep breath, and ask myself if this was really where I wanted to invest my money.
The other thing that helped a lot, was giving myself a time limit before I was allowed to spend money. I would choose a period of time before I allowed myself to spend money. If I knew my paycheck would hit my account on Friday, I wouldn’t allow myself to spend anything until 3 days later. If I got a big cash tip at work, I set the rule that I needed to deposit it into the bank and wait 3 days until allocating or spending it.
These things are what helped me to become the person with a better money story than Survival.
